Manifiesto [en]

To the press, the Spanish public representatives and to all the people camped in the squares all around the Spanish territory:

We are a group of people who work at Stanford and Berkeley universities or live in Silicon Valley and California and want to express our satisfaction, anger, hope and solidarity towards the demonstrations that have been taking place during this week.

We are satisfied, because the demonstrations on May 15th and the following ones have broken the image of an apathetic and conformist society, and especially with the idea of a youth resigned to their fate. Different factors converge in these demonstration such as social initiatives, claims for a dignified work, housing and education and the discomfort of many people who not only demand a more united and democratic society, but are also willing to act to achieve it.

We are outraged, because to overcome this crisis, caused by an unsustainable growth model based on construction, political parties have chosen not to undertake fair, democratic and imaginative proposals. Rather, they have imposed reforms of the labor market, banks, pensions and cuts in basic public services which are undemocratic because they have been implemented without real debat

We are hopeful, because we believe that these demonstrations will wake up social conscience. The energy generated can and should be funneled to thinking practical and effective solutions to overcome this brutal financial crisis without increasing inequality and the degradation of the social tissue.

We want to show solidarity because we see how our friends and family are suffering a deep and unfair economic and social recession and how effort and education are not rewarded with decent working conditions. Despite the official rhetoric in support of research and development, there is not enough real commitment in this area, hence losing another opportunity to drive innovation and excellence that would generate employment and social benefits.

We trust that you will continue fighting until the political class understands that we say enough to their playing with our future.
